WHAT DO WE DO?
Each wheel requires different preparation, and some manufacturers have a different process for best adhesion, but after mounting over 500 tyres since 2019, we have a process which we believes is best for everyone.
- Preparation of Rim - Remove residue using wax and grease remover
- Light scuff of surface of rim using a scourer pad.
- Cleaning of Rim using Isopropyl Alcohol and allowing to airdry
- Prepare for Tape or Glue
WHICH METHOD IS BEST FOR ME?
This is always a "there is no best option" answer from us, and it will vary depending on the rider, the usage and the requirements. For riders who want the highest adhesion, we recommend glue , for riders who want clean and easy removal and re-fit, we recommend the glue and tape method. One benefit that the "Tape and Glue" method has is a completely clean removal process, leaving no residue, allowing for immediate re-mounting without any cleaning or tidying up needed.
TALK ME THROUGH EACH
GLUING A TYRE
When we glue a tyre, our general process is as follows
- Apply a layer of Rim Cement / Glue to the Rim
- Wait approx 4 hours
- Apply another layer of Rim Cement / Glue to the Rim
- Apply a layer to the tyre
- Wait approx 1 hour
- Apply another layer of Rim Cement / Glue to the Tyre
- Allow Tyre to "Tack" and prepare to mount
- Apply a thin wet layer to the Rim
- Mount Tyre and align
- Inflate to Maximum PSI minus 10% (EG Vittoria 217psi would be 195PSI)
- Re-Align if needed
TAPING AND GLUING A TYRE
The tape and glue method is very similar to the above, but can be done sooner, and be ridden even earlier
- Apply base tape to Rim (Includes trimming a valve hole provision)
- Apply 1 layer of glue to tyre
- Mount tyre onto base tape (Non-Stick backing is still in place under the tyre)
- Align Tyre
- Remove base tape and ensure alignment
- Inflate to Maximum PSI minus 10% (EG Vittoria 217psi would be 195PSI)
HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RIDE MY TYRE?
If we have glued and shipped your tyre, it'll be ready to go when it arrives, but typically if we glue a tyre, we recommend around 18-24 hours in a warm (25°c environment) to allow the glue to correctly set and adhere.
For Taped tyres, we usually recommend 18-24 hours, however we have seen riders tape a rim and immediately re-enter the track within 1-2 hours, and start racing. Whilst we don't recommend immediate use, taping and gluing allows for much faster adhesion. The glue still requires a small amount of activation so in a warm environment, this is achieved quickly
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
We supply Glue (We typically use Challenge Rim Cement or Vittoria Mastik, as they're cross-compatible and easy to access) and Tape for either service, and this is reflected in the cost. Should you need a valve extender, we will add one if you do not have one included, and will charge you out prior to shipping.
