Our Story

GEAR Shop Brisbane started back in 2008 and was something completely different.

It was founded by Erik van Genderen in 2008, who ran it until early 2017 before heading back home to the Netherlands. It started as a lifestyle & fashion store, the walls lined with imported streetwear from all over the world. But over time, bikes slowly took over, and the space became something else entirely.

The shop changed hands a few times over the years, and by the time David and Matt took it on in 2019, it had seen better days, however we saw what it could grow into.

Our investment was so much more than blood, sweat and beers. It consumed our days and nights, and the honest truth, our plans kept changing. During its lifetime, the shop was renovated more times than we can count (eight, we think), but each version got it closer to what GEAR Shop Brisbane became, which was a small space that somehow turned into a local hub and place to come hang out. Beers, banter and sometimes too many people in a tiny shop. We wouldn't have it any other way...

It was never just about us.
People like Kieran, Tom, Jonno and Lili were the ones most of you saw day to day, and our close friends Josh and James were always there when things got busy (or when we over committed and needed help). Plenty of others passed through too, and every one of them left their mark. The shop wouldn't have been what it was without the people we called our team - but they were more than that, they were family.

As things grew, we were lucky enough to be involved in activations and events beyond the storefront, supporting AusCycling QLD at the Anna Meares Velodrome as a signage sponsor, showing up each year to the Australian Track Nationals, a special time of year, to support our amazing cyclists, and operate our trade display with our vendors from around the globe.

In June 2025, we closed the doors on our little 23m² space in West End, QLD. That wasn't an easy decision, and for a while, we weren't sure if there was a "next" for GEAR Shop Brisbane. With an upcoming move to Adelaide, a bit of time to think, and a lot of "what if" moments, we realised we weren't quite ready to let it go and abandon the community we were involved with.

Leaving Brisbane was hard, REALLY hard. That little shop gave us more than we ever expected, support, friendships, long nights, early mornings, chaos, and a lot of good times in between. We can't thank you enough for being part of it.

So here we are, onto something new.
GEAR Shop Brisbane (Adelaide? 🤣) is back as a dedicated Track Cycling and Fixed Gear online retailer. Our focus on the two communities that built us in the first place. It's a different format, and for now there's no walk-in retail space, but we're still here to help however we can. And for those local to Adelaide, we'll be offering some services again too. Watch this space.

A new city, new faces, same mindset. We're looking forward to what comes next and we hope you are excited too.

It used to look something like this...
