Use of plastic bearing shields solves this problem, protecting your crank and providing a more consistent contact and reducing unnecessary wear.

These can be used in many aftermarket bottom brackets to replace the alloy sleeves that manufacturers often install, allowing you to service your bearings more easily as well as protecting your cranks.
